School based interventions

For the fulfillment of our objectives, IDEA has always believed in employing an end to end approach. Our aim of reducing the incidences of school drop outs is going to be possible only if we curtail the situation at the basic level that is during the initial years of schooling. In line with this objective, we at IDEA have an extensive reach through our association with more than 30 Government schools including Municipal Schools and Zilla Parishad schools across the district of Pune. Through structured schools based interventions programs, IDEA volunteers reach out to the underprivileged students and instill within them the interest to pursue their education.

1.    Capacity building programmes for teachers

Teachers are an integral part of the education system. In fact, the teachers are responsible for developing and sustaining the interest of children in education and schooling. Given this scenario, we at IDEA undertake capacity building programmes especially for the teachers. Through these programs, the teachers are updated with the latest in terms of technology and teaching technique to maximize the learning of the children.

2.    Counseling services for children and their families.

At IDEA, we precede our welfare projects with a thorough research of the subject. During this research, we have identified several key symptoms that lead to students dropping out from school. One such symptom is the reduced attendance. As a result of this insight, our counselors and social workers monitor school attendance of children to identify those who are irregular in School and accordingly work with them to avoid the symptom from escalating to the level of dropping out from school. Apart from these, we continue with our regular need based interventions depending on the problems faced by children in school, at home or in their peer group in order to lead them to solutions.

3.    Life skill education for children.

This is a pilot project undertaken by us for children in class 5 to 6. Currently, our IDEA volunteers are working across three selected corporation schools. Under this program, our volunteers impart basic education on several life skills and that to on a weekly basis. This course will be conducted over a span of two years. At the end of the program, our IDEA volunteers will also conduct an evaluation of the children to analyze the impact of the program and the overall benefit

4.    Co-curricular activities for children.

One of the key features to aid in the holistic development of the children is to ensure the right kind of exposure for the children. Apart from the regular study based initiatives, we at IDEA also organize a host of extracurricular activities for all our children. Through these activites, we help the underprivileged children to learn through fun filled activities along with enhancing their overall personality by incorporating skills like public speaking, reading, elocution, essay writing and a lot more.

5.    Strengthening through regular parent-teacher & School Management Committee meetings

It is very important to conduct regular parent teacher meeting. At IDEA, in all our initiatives, we reiterate this point through mandatory parent teacher meetings. These meetings ensure that parents are always in loop with regards to their child’s development in studies. In fact, our IDEA volunteers also conduct Awareness programs, sessions on parenting, discussions on adolescent issues in such meetings.

6.    Study Skill workshops

Schooling is a complete package. From teaching the students to helping them clear their exams, all activities fall under the purview of schooling. As a part of our objective to make schooling more interesting for underprivileged students, we also conduct special study skill workshops. Through these workshops, we share with students tips on improving their skills on writing examination and battling exam related stress
